ERCS runs Scotland’s only free legal advice service on environmental law. Our first 250 cases reveal the widespread range of environmental problems across Scotland and the need for our work.
Since launching our free legal advice service in 2021, we have responded to over 250 concerns about the environment and how to exercise our environmental rights in Scotland.
Available to read now, our Snapshot of Advice Service emphasises the need for legal advice on environmental law in Scotland. It shows the big picture on who we are working with, where our cases are coming from, and what kind of problems our clients are concerned about.
Across 250 cases, we provided advice on whether laws were being breached and how this could be challenged to protect the environment and our right to live in a healthy environment.

ERCS Advice Service client
Our advice service works with anyone free of charge, and especially seeks to work with marginalised groups and places we know are disproportionately affected by environmental degradation. Across a wide scale of legal issues, people’s concerns included challenging poor planning decisions, water and sewage pollution, land contamination, as well as help on Freedom of Information requests.
However, we believe these cases are only the tip of the iceberg and we could do much more.
We are now fundraising to launch our law centre in 2024. To do this, we need to recruit one more lawyer to work with more people and hold public bodies and polluters to account.
