Environmental Rights Centre for Scotland is recruiting a Rights Officer to advance the human right to a healthy environment for equality groups.

At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic, climate and biodiversity crises highlight the essential role of environmental rights in upholding all human rights, this is a unique and exciting opportunity to increase awareness of our legal rights and improve participation and confidence in exercising them.

ERCS’s vision is of a Scotland where every person’s right to live in a healthy environment is fully realised. You will have a passion for supporting less often heard voices in decisions that affect them, and an understanding of and commitment to reducing the structural barriers to access to justice on the environment.

As ERCS’s Rights Officer, you will outreach and collaborate with organisations who represent or support equality groups, particularly disabled people’s organisations, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, Gypsy/Travellers, women and young people with protected characteristics to deliver a strategic portfolio of training, events and accessible information in different formats.

You will also lead on the development of an online forum to provide peer support, and support people to identify specific environmental concerns that can be referred to our In-house Solicitor for free legal advice.

The ideal candidate will be committed to environmental justice, have a track record of working with one or more equality groups and excellent training and group work skills. They will be a strategic thinker, an excellent communicator, self-motivated with a naturally collaborative working style, and will thrive in a small, creative team.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. We particularly encourage applications from women, disabled, and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates, and individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

For informal enquires contact Shivali Fifield, Chief Officer at sfifield@ercs.scot.
